Nadine Barbisan takes home Presidents’ Award, six alumni win big at Sport BC’s Athlete of the Year Awards

Sport BC hosted its annual Athlete of the Year Awards on Thursday, March 5, with a number of BC Games and Team BC alumni receiving recognition.

In total, six alumni of the BC Games or Team BC were recognized with major awards while 12 more finished as finalists. Of the 18 total alumni nominated for major awards, 17 have attended the BC Games while seven have represented Team BC at a Canada Games.

In the Team of the Year category, Duchess Park Sr Boys Volleyball took home the honours after going undefeated on their way to a provincial title. Every member of the team, which captured four banners and had six first-place finishes, is an alumnus of the BC Games.

In a ceremony prior to the awards, 39 individuals were presented with a Sport BC Presidents’ Award celebrating their outsized impact as volunteers. Alison Noble, BC Games Society President and CEO, was on hand to present a Presidents’ Award to Nadine Barbisan (BC Wheelchair Basketball) in recognition of her outstanding contributions to both the BC Games and Team BC.  A longtime volunteer at the multi-sport Games and an advocate for accessibility in sport, Barbisan reprised her role as Mission Staff at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in August before serving as the Provincial Advisor for Wheelchair Basketball at the Trail-Rossland 2026 BC Winter Games in February.

Each year, the Presidents’ Awards, presented by Sports with Balls (and a Rock), honour volunteers from Sport BC member organizations whose contributions go beyond expectation and whose impact is felt far beyond the field of play.

BC Games and Team BC alumni suiting up for Canada at Paralympic Games

Three alumni of the BC Games or Team BC are suiting up for Canada at the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games from March 6 – 15, 2026.

Natalie Wilkie (Para nordic), Mollie Jepsen (Para nordic), and Leo Sammarelli (Para alpine) will represent Canada on the highest stage in Italy this week. Wilkie and Jepsen both attended the BC Games while Sammarelli represented Team BC at the 2019 Canada Winter Games and 2022 Canada Summer Games.

Natalie Wilkie, Mollie Jepsen, and Leo Sammarelli

Natalie Wilkie – Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games (Cross Country Skiing)
Wilkie has won seven medals over two Paralympic Winter Games to make her one of the world’s most successful athletes in Para nordic skiing and earn her the honour of being a flag bearer for Canada at the opening ceremony. In the 2025-26 season, Wilkie collected six victories on the Para biathlon World Cup circuit and earned the Crystal Globe as the overall champion in the women’ standing category for the first time in her career.

Mollie Jepsen – Greater Vernon 2012 BC Winter Games (Alpine Skiing)
Jepsen is a six-time medallist at the Paralympic Winter Games and is once again a top multi-medal contender for Canada at Milano Cortina 2026. She previously competed at Beijing 2022 and PyeongChang 2018, dealing with a Crohn’s disease diagnosis between the two events and coming back to win gold in the downhill, silver in the giant slalom, and carry the flag for Canada at the Closing Ceremony.

Leo Sammarelli – Red Deer 2019 Canada Winter Games (Para nordic) // Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games (Athletics)
This will mark the first Paralympic Winter Games for Sammarelli, who was introduced to Para nordic skiing in 2018 through the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Paralympian Search. He picked up the sport quickly, training with Nordic Racers in North Vancouver to progress from being unable to complete a sprint to competing on the world stage.

Richmond’s Charlotte Chan wins W.R. Bennett Award in Trail-Rossland

Wheelchair basketball’s Charlotte Chan was presented with the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence on Saturday, February 28 at the Trail-Rossland 2026 BC Winter Games.

The W.R. Bennett Award recognizes one athlete at each BC Winter and BC Summer Games who demonstrates athletic achievement and leadership. The award was named in honour of former premier Bill Bennett, who created the BC Games in 1978. Nominations are submitted by Provincial Sport Organizations, and the winner receives a $2,500 bursary.

The Richmond local helped lead her Zone 5-Vancouver-Coastal team to a silver medal in Trail-Rossland. On hand to help present the award after the gold medal game were the Honourable Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sports, and wheelchair basketball legend Tim Frick.

“Charlotte is not only an exceptional athlete and student, but she is also a young woman of integrity, compassion, and purpose,” said Nadine Barbisan, the Provincial Advisor for Wheelchair Basketball at the Games. “Over her three trips to the BC Winter Games, she has proven to be a true leader both on and off the court.”

This is the third BC Winter Games for Chan, who won the John Lundie “Most Heart” Award at the Greater Vernon BC Winter Games in 2023 and returned for the Lhtako Quesnel BC Winter Games in 2024. This past year, she helped lead Team BC to a silver medal at Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Nationals.
