GFL Environmental Helps Deliver a Low-Waste Trail-Rossland 2026 BC Winter Games

TRAIL, B.C. — The Trail-Rossland 2026 BC Winter Games are proud to recognize GFL Environmental as a key Community Partner in delivering a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Games experience for athletes, families, and spectators across the region. A major legacy of the Games will be the introduction of organics collection at six key food venues, including both commercial and school sites. This level of food waste diversion is not currently offered in the region and is only possible through GFL’s leadership and operational contribution. GFL will also oversee the collection of recyclables and general waste at food venues throughout the event.

The Trail-Rossland 2026 BC Winter Games are implementing a range of additional initiatives to reduce waste and emissions, including encouraging participants to bring refillable water bottles, using reusable dish ware at select sites, providing reusable lunch bags, reducing single-serve packaging, and minimizing printing through electronic schedules and QR codes. Transportation efforts will also include shuttle service for Biathlon, limited parking to encourage carpooling, and the use of some electric buses for student travel.

“GFL has a big involvement in the community, with a strong focus on supporting youth sports,” said Kurtis Olejniczak, General Manager, GFL Environmental. “The BC Winter Games were a great opportunity to give back by diverting waste and recycling from landfills and working toward making the Games as close to net-zero waste as possible.” In addition to providing essential services, GFL is supporting the Games through volunteer leadership. Olejniczak is serving on the Trail-Rossland 2026 BC Winter Games Host Society as Chair of Environment Services, helping guide sustainability planning across all venues and operations.

The Trail-Rossland 2026 BC Winter Games will welcome more than 1,100 young athletes from across British Columbia February 25 to March 1, 2026. Through partnerships like GFL’s, the Games are demonstrating how community collaboration can strengthen both sport and environmental stewardship.
